I bought the open sallet “Franz” for a more knightly look on the battlefield than my kettle hat.

The first photo shows my old kettle hat with a decorative band in the colours of my coat of arms. The second shows the open sallet “Franz”, freshly unpacked and wiped down.
I bought this helmet from Mytholon during a sale for EUR 63.91.

Fit
If you have a short neck, you might have problems turning your head. I was able to wear the helmet even with glasses. One half of the chin strap is too long for my taste. In my case, this makes it difficult to close the helmet.

Quality
Overall, the workmanship makes a good impression on me. However, some edges feel sharp, and there are small scratches and uneven areas. Despite the low purchase price, I consider these weaknesses worth mentioning.

The helmet is painted black on the inside and has a padded fabric liner. Although the external rivets suggest that the liner is riveted in place, it is actually glued in.
Ideas for modifications
Here are some ideas for modifying the helmet. Detailed DIY guides are planned for later.
Chin strap
If the chin strap is too long for you, shortening or replacing it are possible options.
Suspension liner
A suspension liner could help you adjust how high the helmet sits on your head. This is an option for a future modification, rather than a change tested in this review.
Decorative helmet band
A decorative band can change the look of the helmet. The shell widens slightly before tapering towards the top, which can give it a rounded appearance. A narrow band in the colours of your outfit or banner could provide a visual contrast.
Crest
A crest needs a suitable attachment.
Colour
Painting always works.
Verdict
My initial impression is positive about the fit with glasses, but the long chin strap, sharp-feeling edges and glued-in liner deserve attention. If you are considering this helmet, check the fit and freedom of movement carefully. This English version does not yet include the field-test findings from the German review.
