I got this Sallet to look a little more chivalrous on the battlefield than with my kettle helmet.

On the left my old kettle helmet with ornamental band in the colors of my coat of arms – on the right the open Sallet Franz, freshly unpacked and wiped off.

I bought this helmet at a sale at Mytholon, because I couldn’t resist for less than 70 euros.

Fit

If you have a short neck, you might have problems turning your head. I was able to wear the helmet even with glasses. One half of the chin strap is too long for my taste. In my case, this makes it difficult to close the helmet.

Like the majority of helmets in the lower 3-digit or even 2-digit range, this one also comes from India. Mytholon doesn’t hide the fact – as you can see from the large Made in India sign.

Quality

The workmanship is excellent. You can tell that armor has been made in India for over 20 years now. Of course, there is an edge here and there that feels sharp when you run your finger over it, but this can be remedied with a bit of sandpaper and you certainly won’t get hit in these places.

As you can see from the pictures, the helmet is painted black on the inside and has a padded fabric inlay. Even though the rivets on the outside suggest that the padding is riveted, this is not the case and the inlay has been glued.

Pimp My Helmet

Here are a few ideas of what you could change/improve on the helmet. Sooner or later the corresponding tinkering blogs will follow.

Helmet strap/chin strap

If you also have problems with the length of the chinstrap, there are several options. Shorten the strap or replace it.

New Inlay

If you want to replace the strap anyway, you can also consider making a helmet spider. The advantage of this is that you can better determine the height at which the helmet sits on your head. I will do this in any case and then explain how to do it and what you need for it.

Helmband

This is a quick hack that makes a big difference in the end. As the helmet first gets a little wider before it tapers towards the top, you might look a bit egg-headed with the helmet. A simple helmet strap can distract from this. It’s best to use scraps of fabric that match your outfit or the banner. Details in the craft blog.

Crest

But this won’t work without proper fastening.

Color

Painting always works.
